“Male of the Species”
Having lived one moment,
I was hooked.
From my first breath,
I couldn’t think of one thing
I’d rather be doing.
And this was before
books and ballgames.
television, snacks,
sex, love, any of that.
Light and moans
and blood and
soft applause
was all I had to go on
Someone whispered “It’s a boy.”
I took that as a yes.
